Techfest, the three-day annual science and technology festival of IIT Bombay, is set to begin on Wednesday. Apart from an impressive line of tech exhibitions and lecture series, the festival this year has taken up the Energy Literacy Training initiative.

Launched by the Energy Swaraj Foundation, founded by an IIT Bombay Professor Dr Chetan Solanki, popularly known as Solar Man of India or Solar Gandhi, this initiative aims at creating awareness on the impact of energy on the environment and enabling informed decisions for a more sustainable future.

Participants at Techfest will not only be encouraged to take up the initiative, but all those who complete the 12-module course will get a certificate from the foundation.

“We have created a portal titled – Energy Swaraj Portal where we have several partner organisations connected with us who are encouraging individuals to take the course. Techfest IIT Bombay is the first academic institution partner organisation in Maharashtra,” said Dr Solanki, who was on campus earlier this year, celebrating 1000 days of his 10-year bus journey, which started in November 2020 to create awareness about solar energy.

Shriya Kajrolkar, Media and Marketing Head for this year’s Techfest, said Techfest 2023 will hold an education fair for the first time where international universities such as the University of Sydney, University of Otago, National Taiwan University, National University of Singapore, and the British Council will set up their kiosks to provide information on engaging courses they have to offer.

Festive offer

“Realising the huge target audience that we have on campus during Techfest, the organising committee decided to start with an education fair to provide information on available higher education opportunities across the globe,” added Kajrolkar.

Techfest 2023 will also see attractive events like international robowars and drone racing competitions.

Kajrolkar said, “There are 30 pilots in the international drone racing league with one international pilot Rousseau Killian from France who has been world champion twice. Robowars will see four international teams this year – Nepal, Russia, South Korea and Brazil. Last year, there were only two international teams.”

Techfest this year also has an impressive list of speakers for its lecture series such as S Somnath, Chairman, ISRO; Harshbir Sangha from the U K Space Agency, Akash Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Jio, among others.

For the first time, Techfest will also hold a lecture series on strategy, leadership, and the future of defence in India. Among speakers for this series will include Dr G. Satheesh Reddy, former chairman of DRDO, along with former chiefs of the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force.

Techfest organisers are expecting a footfall of more than 1.75 lakh participants from over 2,500 higher education institutions across India and international universities.
