Nearly 3 lakh passengers travelled in the North-South Metro in Kolkata on the occasion of Christmas till 6pm on Monday, officials said. “The North-South Metro carried 2,98,116 passengers on Christmas till 6 pm. This is 17,753 more than last year’s figure of 2,80,363 till 6 pm,” said Kausik Mitra, spokesperson of the Eastern Railway.
The maximum passenger rush was witnessed at Dum Dum, Esplanade, Maidan, and Park Street Metro stations. The Metro authorities opened additional counters at the stations amid adequate security measures and provided additional tokens and smart cards to manage the expected rush today.
On Christmas eve on Sunday, the Metro carried 2,61,759 passengers till 6pm.
Also, the Metro timings from Dakshineswar to Kavi Subhash were extended till 10.58 pm from 9.28 pm. The last Metro from Kavi Subhash was to leave Dum Dum at 11.10 pm instead of 9.40 pm. tonight.
Till Sunday midnight ahead of Christmas, the Kolkata Police arrested 325 people for disorderly conduct and seized 4o litre liquor, officials said.
The city traffic police challaned/fined/prosecuted 459 people, officials said. Of these, 131 were driving without helmet, 93 drove rashly while 89 for were driving in a drunken state.
